On June 12 the Senate began the process of determining next year's funding amount for CHGME. The Labor-Health & Human Services-Education Appropriations subcommittee met and recommended $265.2 million for the program in 2013. This is a step up from the $88 million requested by the President, but short of the $317.5 which we believe is needed to sustain workforce needs and a growing population of children in the United States. Subcommittee Chairman Tom Harkin (D-IA) referenced that funding for CHGME was not being cut, and that the Subcommittee was rejecting the President’s proposed reductions to the program.
The next step will happen tomorrow, when the full Senate Appropriations Committee begins work on the bill. (For more information on this process, see our previous blog post.) It's expected they will approve the same funding level. There is still time to write your legislators and urge their support of CHGME, so please do so today.
The House could take up the bill as early as next week. Keep checking back to With All Our Might for the latest information.
