Marc Holland, vice president of research at HIMSS Analytics, shared data on electronic medical record adoption trends, looking at where children's hospitals stand compared to other hospitals, the progress that has been made in the past four years, and what to expect for the future.
NACHRI and HIMSS Analytics has a relationship that started in 2007, sharing a joint interest in collecting and analyzing data to assist NACHRI hospitals with benchmarking amongst peers.
The HIMSS Analytics database includes 5,274 hospitals. 195 are NACHRI members. 194 of those could be trended across 2007-2010. A look at EMR adoption shows children's hospitals have made much more rapid progress than hospitals as a whole.
EMR adoption is ranked from Stage 0 through Stage 7, with Stage 7 being the most comprehensive, fully electronic medical system. As of the beginning of March, 2011, 14.4 percent of NACHRI hospitals had achieved Stage 6 or 7, compared with 4.2 percent of all hospitals; 53.9 percent of children's hospitals have achieved Stage 4 or higher, compared with 19.2 percent of all hospitals. On the bottom end of the spectrum, only 2.1% of NACHRI hospitals are at Stage 0 or 1, compared with 17.2% of all hospitals.
Slides will be available soon on the NACHRI website that contained a detailed breakout of this research and a large volume of related data.
Meaningful Use
To expect to achieve meaningful use standards, which is where a lot of government funding is to be found for EMR implementation, hospitals need to be at at least Stage 4 EHR implementation. Children's hospitals are positioned at this point to take advantage in the short term of government dollars because of their lead in EHR adoption.
Looking down the road, Holland identified three words that correspond to three stages of meaningful use adoption: capture, share, improve. The regulations in existance or coming down the pipe help hospitals to think about their meaningful use data in these broad ideas.
For more information on EMR Implementation, watch for the slides to be added soon to the NACHRI website.
Where is your hospital at in EMR implementaton? What have been your biggest hurdles, and what challenges do you see ahead?
Great post! Thanks for sharing this update. i hope it can have a better result.
