Kyla is a very active nine-year-old, who is a third grader in the Hanover County Public School system. She participates in baseball, soccer, horseback riding, piano, cheerleading, Girl Scouts and drama. Kyla was diagnosed with cerebral palsy in 2003, due to significant spasticity in both legs, resulting in extreme difficulties in crawling, walking and standing. Through the Children’s Hospital of Richmond network of doctors, Kyla’s family pursued an extremely aggressive treatment regimen, including a spinal surgery called a selective dorsal rhizotomy in 2004. As a result of this surgery and an ongoing intensive regimen of physical activity, coupled with weekly physical therapy at Children’s Hospital of Richmond, Kyla has become a high functioning child with cerebral palsy and plans to be a spokesperson on cerebral palsy when she grows up.
Kyla, we are very proud of you! Thank you so much for representing Children's Hospital of Richmond.

You are so brave, my girl. Remember what our buddy, Garth Brooks says: "And I will sail my vessel
'Til the river runs dry
Like a bird upon the wind
These waters are my sky
I'll never reach my destination
If I never try
So I will sail my vessel
'Til the river runs dry"
Keep being brave and I'm glad I get to sail the vessel with you. Love, Daddy

Kyla...you are very deserving of this cool opportunity and quite an inspiration to many in the local community (and nationally soon). Keep an eye on your parents in DC and make sure they don't do anything to embarrass you! Ha Ha!

Kyla... You are such an amazing young diva and such a great friend and neighbor to our children. You are very blessed to have your wonderful parents who have done everything possible to get you the best treatments available. I have never heard you mention giving up on anything in life nor have you ever portrayed a less than positive attitude. At nine years old, you are already an inspiration to us all! We are so proud of you!
